Gazela Primeiro visits New Bedford - shared fishing history

The Portuguese barketine Gazela Primeiro homeported in Philadelphia will visit New Bedford from Thusday, July 29, 2010, through August 2. Ernstina, as Effie. M. Morrissey, fished the Grand Banks for the salt cod trade during the years of Gazela's early life using the same two-man dory longlining methods that the Portuguese continued to use until the early 1970s.
Come down and see this famous fishing vessel which shares so much heritage with Ernestina, with the fishing ports of Gloucester, Providence, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, and with our Portuguese fishing families. Hear about how the non-profit Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild operates as an all volunteer organization keeping this and other historic vessels going.
